The Linville Hotel

We've just returned from spending the weekend at Linville and The Linville Hotel. We started out on Saturday by driving to Toowoomba. Then we called in to Crows Nest to visit the soft drink factory which has been producing traditional soft drinks in glass bottles since 1903. We bought a carton and a half to put away for Christmas so we could get some of each flavour. We bought creaming soda, double sars, raspberry, lime, portabello, musk, mandarin, ginger ale, lemon lime and bitters and cherry cheer. After leaving the factory we continued on to Yarraman and Blackbutt before calling in to Linville as we had been wanting to visit the old pub there. It is such a lovely spot in the world and we were having such a wonderful time that we decided to stay the night despite not having so much as a change of clothes or toothbrush. Around the garden

I'm changing a few things about the way I garden this year. I'm letting as many heirloom varieties go to seed as I can to both save and harvest the seeds to store for next season and also to encourage self-sowing. This also has the added benefit of encouraging beneficial predatory insects into the garden and keeps the pollinators happy. I'm also looking ahead in terms of saving money in the future by not having to constantly replenish seed stocks as heirloom varieties can be expensive and also potentially hard to access in times of high demand.  Over successive sowings these varieties should also become better acclimated to our local conditions here in Ipswich which can be freezing or swelteringly hot and humid depending on the season.  Have a beautiful day.

Rainy days

                                This past weekend we had our first taste of the summer that is to come. Dark low skies and lots of rain. The garden and frogs loved it. I've been listening to the frogs unsychronized chorus of an evening as they each call out from their respective downpipes. I do love a green tree frog. The snails and slugs love it too. I've been having to wash lettuce extra carefully. It's the old joke -  What's worse than finding a snail in your salad?  Finding half a snail. Today it is beautiful and sunny with a fresh breeze to blow away the clouds. It's wonderful to be at home with no plans to go anywhere and spend some time in the garden and catch up on some domestic chores. I might even listen to a podcast or two.  May your day be beautiful and kind.
